Today is International Women’s Day! We celebrate all female-identifying individuals and the wonderful things that they have accomplished and continue to accomplish every day.
At Moves, we are dedicated to promoting equality and creating a fair and straightforward process for all employees; both current and prospective. Fintech is overwhelmingly male-identifying dominated and we want to showcase two of our female-identifying colleagues and why they love working at Moves.
Stephanie, one of our incredible Software Developers, and Sophie, one of our wonderful Customer Support Associates have each shared their experiences of working at Moves.
I joined Moves through a friend I’d made at a previous job, who sent me the posting with a pre-emptive: “I swear it’s not just a fintech company.” I joked that “fintech company” was in the very first sentence of the job description. We had talked before about how I couldn’t imagine myself working for one, the area just never appealed to me as someone whose path to software engineering started in a childhood doing art, then a degree in architecture, before a last-minute pivot to a coding boot camp brought me to programming. But true to his word, the more I read about Moves, the more I felt compelled by its mission statement to empower gig workers, whose importance was especially felt in the middle of a global pandemic. Combined with his endorsement of the people and company culture, I joined Moves with the confidence that it would be a fantastic place to work.
One of the things that really made an impression on me early on came at the end of the interview process. I asked for a salary that I thought was a fair amount relative to what I had made previously, a number that I arrived at with the knowledge that women are known to ask for and accept less than their male counterparts. To my surprise, Moves responded with a figure that was significantly higher. This was the standard for what they paid others with a similar level of experience, and they were committed to pay parity. This kind of integrity solidified my decision to join the company, and from there, the people and the opportunities on the job have helped me thrive.
I’ve been a developer for four years, and at Moves for just over one of those years. I’ve spent the entirety of my early career at start-ups, where I feel there is a lot of room for growth. There is so much opportunity to learn on your feet, to try out many things and to really take ownership of projects as they’re built from the ground up. Over the course of just my single year at Moves, I worked on the US launch of an entirely new mobile app and the expansion of one Node microservice into a dozen. Crucially for a young company, this work has been led by talented senior developers who provide much-needed technical expertise, leadership and mentorship. It can’t be understated how important it is to have these kinds of individuals as the backbone of your team, especially if, like me, you came to the field without a traditional computer science background.
It’s been so exciting to grow at Moves and to see it grow in return. Anyone who has worked at a start-up before knows how quickly things can change, but with all the changes that have happened over the course of this year—and there have been so many—Moves remain for me in the sweet spot for the three pillars I consider most important: career development, culture and product vision. I’m looking forward to what 2022 will bring and all the new changes on the horizon.
I love my job because….responding to these 5 words may be a vast and challenging sentence for many people to complete. For me and my experience so far at Moves, I can answer quite simply…
Beginning my first day with Moves, I received an outpouring of support and encouragement from my new team as well as the rest of the company – including our CEO. There has always been a very personalized and professional approach to interactions, leaving me feeling excited to speak and learn more about my colleagues. One of the parts I cherish most about my experience with Moves is as a group we are constantly challenging each other in the best way possible – encouraging each other to grow professionally and personally!
As a woman, entering into my job in a Fintech startup, I was nervous about how I would fit in, and if my input would be taken into consideration (given my limited knowledge in the space). I was almost immediately asked questions about how the onboarding process could be streamlined, and what I thought I could do for the department I am in (Member Support). From day one, this company asked for my ideas? They were genuinely interested in hearing my opinion? Team members at Moves are always looking for input, feedback and growth opportunities to push the company forward and, most importantly, I can feel confident that my voice is heard and valued.
Transparency is also such an important part of any healthy relationship- professional or not- and there has never been a shortage of it at Moves. Employees are brought along on the growth progress within the company- and we are asked that we aid in this. OKRs are a regular occurrence and are shared company-wide to ensure every employee is aware of what is happening within each team. I am grateful for the transparency I have with my manager and I feel this has been critical to create an overall positive work environment. We have weekly check-ins where time is blocked off for us to speak about anything and everything; from what our dogs are doing to how I performed on my latest task. Our open (physical/virtual) door policy as a company gives me the freedom and reassurance to contact anyone at any time to have an open and confidential conversation with.
It is important for me in a work environment to be able to be myself and have fun in what I do. Moves shares these same values and is always offering social activities and learning opportunities throughout the week. From paintballing, stuffing our faces with great food and connecting over wine/coffee with colleagues in Muskoka this past year to taking part in an upcoming virtual pasta-making event from a couple in Italy, Moves knows how to invest in people to ensure we have fun! I believe these social and fun activities have brought our teams closer together and is another reason why I love my job.
Taking the leap in joining a Fintech startup almost a year ago, has been one of the most rewarding decisions I have made and it is because at Moves; we listen to each other, we value one another’s opinions, we create a transparent and professional work environment, and we invest to in our people all while having fun! That is simply, why I love my job!
