Source the Best Prices with Gas Apps
The simplest way to save money on gas is to source the cheapest gas in your area. However, sourcing affordable gas doesn’t mean driving around from gas station to gas station, wasting your time to find the best bargain.
To find the cheapest gas in your locale, you can use gas apps like GasBuddy. This app finds the price of gas at nearby stations and compares them. Though GasBuddy is the most popular gas app, complaints have been made about its privacy policies and user data tracking.
Another cheap gas app, owned by Yellow Pages, is Gas Guru. Gas Guru works the same way that GasBuddy does, mapping out the most affordable gas prices either in your area or on route to a destination. Gas Guru also allows you to filter by the kind of gas you would like to put in your car.
Geico Gas Tracker
An additional option is Geico’s local gas station tracker. With Geico’s gas tracker, you can enter your City, ZIP code, or an exact address, and the tracker will provide you with a map of gas station prices within the maximum distance selected by you.
Like Gas Guru, Geico’s service also provides you with directions and the option to choose what type of gas you would like to use.
Gas Loyalty Programs
There are dozens of loyalty reward programs that allow members to rack up points and qualify for gas discounts. Each program operates differently and offers a variety of perks and rewards. While we are only naming a few options, it is essential to find the right loyalty program based on your spending habits. Most gas loyalty programs are free to participate in.
GetUpside is the first loyalty program on our list. With GetUpside, you can earn cash back every time you fill gas. The GetUpside app is free to use and works to provide you cash back at thousands of participating gas stations around the US.
With GetUpside, your payments are completed normally on your debit or credit card and your cash back balance will be maintained on your GetUpside account. When you are ready to cash out, multiple options are available to you, including cashing out through your bank account, a PayPal account, or through gift cards.
Conveniently, Lyft drivers who use GetUpside can receive up to 32¢ cash back per gallon. All users can also save a bonus of 15¢ per gallon of gas if they invite a friend to the app. A final core benefit of GetUpside is that it is stackable and works alongside other coupons, discounts, and loyalty programs.
Speedy Rewards is a popular loyalty program to help you save money on gas. With Speedy rewards, you can earn points toward gas discounts every time you spend money at a Speedway convenience store.
With Speedy Rewards, you earn 10 points per gallon of fuel, and 20 points per dollar spent on merchandise. They also have monthly bonus points associated with certain merchandise items. The value of each Speedway point is around .09 cents each. Another popular gas loyalty reward is Kroger Fuel Rewards.
Kroger Fuel Rewards
With Kroger Fuel Rewards, you are granted points for grocery purchases at Kroger stores. For every dollar spent at a Kroger grocery store, you will earn 1 point. Every 100 points accumulated will grant you a $0.10 discount on a gallon of gas.
Hot tip: An additional note is that you earn double points when you purchase gift cards, and when you fill qualifying prescriptions, you can earn 50 points.
Try Costco Gas
A Costco membership costs $60 a year, plus tax. If you’re looking into paying for a Costco membership, the gas savings alone make it more than worth it. First and foremost, Costco gas stations nearly always have the lowest gas prices. Costco gas on average is 19.8 cents cheaper per gallon than its competitors. By having low gas prices and gas stations right next to their stores, Costco can encourage more individuals to buy memberships and go shopping after purchasing their gas.
While there is a long list of reasons to use Costco gas, there are a few negative aspects. The most significant con of purchasing Costco gas is that there are often long gas lines—these lines can sometimes be an hour-plus long. Additionally, not everyone has a Costco near them, and the location may be a long drive and out of the way.
Conserve Your Gas
An excellent way to save money on buying gas is to conserve your gas and make a tank last longer. To conserve gas, try to adjust your driving habits. There are many tips and tricks for how to use less gas. Here are some of our favorites:
- When approaching a red light, do not pump the gas. As you are approaching a red light, you know that you will have to stop anyway, so why pump the gas? Let yourself coast to the red light. Try to break as little as possible if you can safely avoid it, as you will lose your forward momentum.
- Use downhill driving to your advantage, especially if you know that you will need to break at the bottom of the hill. Take your foot off the accelerator when driving down hills and let the natural decline carry you.
- Replace your air filter. While this doesn’t sound like a tip for saving money on gas, it definitely will help you save. When an air filter gets dirty and filled with debris, it will prevent your car engine from breathing and will thus cause the engine to work harder and use more fuel. Having a clean air filter can avoid this unnecessary strain on your engine and extra fuel usage.
- Measure your tire pressure. A vehicle with under-inflated tires consumes more fuel. By ensuring your car has proper tire pressure, you can avoid using additional fuel.
- Remove unnecessary weight. Salt, sand, sports equipment, and more are among the items that can often be found within the trunk of a vehicle. These items weigh down your vehicle. Your fuel consumption will increase by 1% for every 25 kilograms of weight for the average car. You also want to remove anything that will decrease your aerodynamics, such as unused bicycle racks on the top of your vehicle.
Saving Gas for Gig Workers
Combine trips and try multi-apping. If you are unfamiliar with the multi-apping concept, it involves being available on multiple gig platforms at once. You can either cherry-pick your ideal gigs, or you can complete numerous gigs at once on different platforms. For example, while completing a Doordash delivery, you could also make a Roadie delivery.
Not only does multi-apping allow you to maximize your income, but it also will allow you to make the most out of your fuel. If you’re already completing one delivery, why not complete a second on that same trip and make the excursion more worthwhile?
Gas is expensive, but learning how to save money on gas is the key to helping ease the financial burden of traveling by car. By utilizing gas apps, Costco gas, and loyalty programs, you can save money with each gas purchase. Additionally, by multi-apping and conserving your gas, you can use your fuel more efficiently and reduce consumption so that you won’t need to purchase gas as frequently. This is what I like to call a win-win.
If you are frequently a gig worker who drives for gigs and are participating in multi-apping as a means of income generation, consider downloading Moves to help you manage your money better!
