Canada-wide Resources

Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB)

  • This tax-free benefit would provide $2,000 a month for up to four months for workers who lose their income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The CERB would cover Canadians who face income instability due to job loss, sickness, time away quarantining, or taking care of someone who is sick with COVID-19, as well as working parents who must stay home without pay to care for children who are sick or at home because of school and daycare closures. The CERB would apply to wage earners, as well as contract workers and self-employed individuals who would not otherwise be eligible for Employment Insurance (EI).
  • Additionally, workers who are still employed, but are not receiving income because of disruptions to their work situation due to COVID-19, would also qualify for the CERB
  • Apply via CRA My Account or by calling either 1-800-959-2019 or 1-800-959-2041 with your Postal Code and SIN number ready.

Employment Insurance (EI)

  • This will simplify the process of receiving EI benefits and extend how long you can receive benefits for to 76 weeks.
  • This is for workers whose hours will be reduced due to COVID-19 such as drivers and food delivery people with a secondary source of income, or for self-employed people who registered for Canada Employment Insurance Commission.
  • Access information regarding EI through the CRA My Account tool. A dedicated phone line will be set up in early April for additional COVID-19 related support.
  • Apply for EI with this expedited application

Canada Child Benefit (CCB)

  • This will provide additional income to families with children.
  • Apply for the benefit via CCB My Account

Student Loan Deferral

  • Anyone with a Canadian student loan will receive a 6-month interest free grace period. This benefit is automatically available for anyone with a Canadian student loan.
  • If you have automatic payments set up for your loan contact your bank or the organization that your loan is with (OSAP in Ontario) to change your payments.
  • More information via National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC)

Mortgage Relief

  • 6-month payment deferrals for mortgages, relief on other credit products.
  • Available to mortgage holders experiencing hardships caused by the COVID-19 crisis.
  • Contact the bank you hold your mortgage with. Relief is being offered on a case-by-case basis with each bank having a slightly different process. CMHC and other mortgage insurers are offering tools including payment deferrals, loan re-amortization, capitalization of outstanding interest arrears, and special payment arrangements.

Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF)

  • The minimum amount seniors can withdraw from their RRIFs has been decreased by 25% easing allowing them to keep more of their investments intact. This is automatic for seniors withdrawing money from an RRIF.
